Parkin enjoyed the battle system's mechanics, but found the rest of the gameplay \"extremely straightforward\" due to a lack of complex environments or side activities.[1] GamePro gave high praise to the combat system and lack of random encounters, in addition to calling the mini game \"practically its own entire game, and fun, too\".[41] Massimilla praised the balanced mechanics of the battle system and customization options.[4] Vasconcellos also enjoyed the customization options available to the player, in addition to the battle system.[6] Dunham enjoyed the combat system and its blending of elements from past games, but was disappointed that no new elements had been added.[42] Martz also enjoyed the varied systems and strategy within combat, despite noting a lack of overall challenge.[5]
The gameplay we saw showed off the on-foot and E.S. battles, which have undergone some changes from Xeno II. The basic combat is still turn-based, but there have been a number of changes and refinements to the system that essentially blend some new features with mechanics cherry-picked from Xeno I and II. You'll select commands from a menu a la Xeno I (attack, tech, ether, special attack, and item), and manage a boost gauge that should be familiar to anyone who played the original game. You'll use up this boost meter to swap characters or perform special attacks. A new element to the combat system is the break gauge, which fills as characters are attacked. Once it's full, the character is essentially immobilized for two turns, and open to attack. The addition is balanced well; while there are special and tech attacks that you can use to fill up your foe's break gauge, there are also items and abilities you can use to lower it.
The third episode retains the combat basics of the two previous games, resembling more the system of the first episode. Weapon and equipment management returns, and the complex break system from the second chapter has been simplified. Once again, there are two kinds of combat, in human form and piloting giant robots. The usage of ether attacks, boost gauge, and other typical Xenosaga gameplay elements are also present in this game. Robot combat is more prominently featured and is handled somewhat differently, the giant gears having a wider variety of attacks at their disposal. Both player-controlled and enemy parties have now a special bar that renders them immobile when filled. Exploiting this feature is yet another strategic addition to the combat. 781b155fdc
